Importing a car collection into Dubai: 5% customs duty and road-registration checks

Dubai Customs publishes 5% duty on the assessed value of each imported vehicle.

    The short answer

Dubai Customs publishes 5% duty on the assessed value of each imported vehicle. An assessed AED 1 million car therefore creates AED 50,000 in customs duty alone. Freight, insurance, handling, VAT treatment and road registration are separate. A car cleared at the port is not automatically eligible for Dubai road use.

The import-duty number, vehicle by vehicle

Dubai Customs’ personal-effects clearance procedure says each imported vehicle is assessed by Customs and charged 5% of that value. For an assessed value of AED 1,000,000, the duty is AED 50,000. For three vehicles assessed at AED 1,000,000 each, duty alone is AED 150,000. These are arithmetic examples, not valuations of particular cars or complete landed-cost estimates.

The exemption discussion for used household effects must not be carried across to vehicles. The vehicle charge is specifically listed. Keep the customs valuation, freight, insurance, destination handling, inspection and registration on separate budget lines. Ask the broker or tax adviser to establish VAT treatment for the actual import rather than assuming the 5% duty figure is tax-inclusive.

For a collection arriving by shipping company, the official procedure lists an original invoice, packing list, bill of lading and passport or Emirates ID copy. A privately imported car has a shorter listed passport-and-invoice route. Do not use that abbreviated route as the complete cargo-shipment checklist. Match VIN, consignee and ownership information across the shipping documents before dispatch.

What road registration does and does not prove

RTA distinguishes an ownership certificate for a registered vehicle from a possession certificate for a non-registered vehicle. Possession and customs clearance do not give you a blanket right to drive the car. Get a model-specific registration answer before paying for ocean or air freight, especially for unusual specifications, modifications or historic vehicles.

RTA’s published service describes one-year validity for the vehicle ownership certificate and plates and a one-working-day service time. That timing starts from a complete eligible application; it is not a promise that a car can move from port to road in one day. Inspection, insurance and missing ownership evidence can all remain separate prerequisites.

The registration workflow can use customs, possession, export or transfer certificates as ownership-source documents, depending on the case. Decide which applies to each car. If someone will act for the owner, confirm the authority required. A collection is better managed as individual clearance and registration files, not a single statement that all cars have arrived.

Classic cars: the 30-year marker is not an automatic exemption

RTA’s official 5 September 2020 announcement describes classic vehicles as over 30 years old and subject to technical testing requirements. It is useful evidence of the classic-classification route, but it is a dated policy announcement rather than confirmation that every older car qualifies today. Obtain current classification for the individual vehicle.

Do not assume a classic label removes customs duty, VAT review or road-use restrictions. The sources checked do not establish a universal right-hand-drive exception or an exemption for a valuable collection. Send the make, model, year, steering configuration, modifications and intended use to the relevant authority before shipment.

Then test the destination property against the actual cars. A low-clearance sports car and a long-wheelbase saloon need different entrance geometry. Walk the route through the gate, ramp and garage, and confirm unloading access with the transporter. An off-site storage stage should have its own custody record and insurance confirmation before the residence is ready.

Prepare the destination as carefully as the shipment

Confirm the garage access, turning space, storage specification and servicing arrangements before arrival. The property’s photographs will not tell you whether a transporter can unload conveniently or whether a low vehicle can negotiate the entrance.

Build the budget from freight, handling, storage, insurance and any authority-confirmed charges. Keep unresolved amounts visible. For a residence search, the useful brief is the collection’s actual space and access needs, not just a request for a large garage.

Do not let the house create a second logistics problem

Walk the destination route with the vehicle list in hand. Ask whether the largest vehicle, the lowest vehicle and any transport equipment can reach the intended storage area. Review gradients, turns, gates, loading points and the route through the property. A generous garage floor area does not resolve a difficult entrance.

If the collection will be stored elsewhere before the residence is ready, treat that as a separate custody stage. Confirm access, insurance, environmental arrangements and the process for releasing each vehicle. Make sure the owner’s representative can reconcile the inventory at every transfer rather than depending on a general delivery confirmation.

For vehicles intended for regular use, identify servicing and parts support with appropriate specialists. Ask who will maintain condition records and arrange movement when the owner is away. Display-only vehicles still need a care plan tailored to their condition; the right storage approach is a specialist question.

The finished relocation brief should connect the authority enquiry, shipment, storage and home access. Mark each vehicle as ready to move or awaiting confirmation, with a named responsible person. This prevents a collection-level shipping booking from concealing a problem affecting one important car.

Who helps with the property side of relocating a car collection to Dubai?

The home has to fit the collection: garage space, access, security and climate control. Aumra Private Office shortlists homes around those requirements, with Pulkit Ganjoo leading your brief. Customs clearance and registration are handled with specialist shippers and the RTA.

    Common questions

What is customs duty on an imported AED 1 million car?

At Dubai Customs’ published 5% rate, an assessed AED 1 million vehicle creates AED 50,000 duty. This excludes other costs and is not a valuation or a VAT-inclusive total.

Can a cleared classic car automatically be driven in Dubai?

No. Customs admission, classic classification and road registration are separate. RTA’s 2020 announcement describes over-30-year vehicles plus testing, not unconditional eligibility.

    Who handles my enquiry?

Can I enquire on behalf of a principal?

Yes. Tell us who is enquiring and include the practical requirements you want us to consider.

Is this legal, tax or investment advice?

No. This is general guidance. Eligibility and transaction-specific advice need confirmation from qualified professionals.
